Simplii Financial, Tangerine and EQ Bank are the three online banks most often compared for no-fee everyday banking. Simplii is a trade name of CIBC, Tangerine is owned by Scotiabank, and EQ Bank is the digital bank of Equitable Bank. None charges a monthly fee on its everyday account, and all three hold deposits at CDIC member institutions.
Past those shared basics they split on cash access, interest on the everyday balance, credit cards and registered accounts. This page compares all three and has a Tangerine vs Simplii section for readers choosing between the two big-bank-owned brands. More pairings are in the bank comparisons hub.

Savings Rates
The posted, non-promotional rates:
| Account | Posted rate |
|---|---|
| EQ Bank Personal Account | 1.00% base; 2.75% with qualifying recurring direct deposits of at least $2,000/month |
| EQ Bank Notice Savings Account | 2.35% (10-day notice), 2.75% (30-day notice) |
| Simplii High Interest Savings Account | 0.30% ($0.00 to $50,000.00), rising by balance tier to 1.00% ($1,000,000.01 and over) |
| Tangerine Savings Account | 0.30% |
The rates work differently. EQ Bank’s bonus rate on the Personal Account is not time-limited, but it depends on the recurring direct deposit; without one, the base rate applies. Its Notice Savings Account has no direct-deposit condition, and instead needs notice before a withdrawal. Simplii and Tangerine pay their posted rates to everyone and run promotional rates on new deposits for a few months at a time; for an offer, check the bank’s current promotion on the Simplii review, the Tangerine review or the bank’s own site. When a promotion ends, the balance earns the posted rate again.
EQ Bank’s rate history and conditions are on the EQ Bank savings rate page, and rates at every bank are compared in the best savings accounts in Canada.
Chequing, Cash and Debit Cards
All three offer unlimited everyday transactions and free Interac e-Transfers with no minimum balance. The differences are in cash, cards and interest.
Cash. Simplii clients use CIBC ATMs for withdrawals and for cash and cheque deposits. Tangerine clients withdraw free at Scotiabank ATMs, and Tangerine says clients “can make deposits and withdrawals for free at any Scotiabank Branch ABM”. EQ Bank has no ATM network or way to deposit cash; the EQ Bank Card gets partial reimbursement of third-party ATM fees in Canada, with the monthly limit in the EQ Bank review.
Debit cards. Tangerine’s Client Card works as an Interac debit card in Canada and as a Visa Debit card for online, in-app and international purchases where Interac isn’t accepted. Simplii issues a standard Interac debit card, which some online and foreign merchants don’t accept. EQ Bank’s card is a prepaid Mastercard, which works wherever Mastercard is taken.
Interest. EQ Bank’s Personal Account pays its savings rate on the whole balance, including pay that is only passing through. Simplii and Tangerine chequing accounts are transaction accounts; savings go in their separate savings accounts.
Fees for overdrafts, NSF items and other services are on each bank’s review: Simplii, Tangerine and EQ Bank. For the wider field of free accounts, see no-fee chequing accounts in Canada.
Credit Cards
EQ Bank doesn’t issue a credit card. Simplii and Tangerine each have a no-fee cash back card:
| Card | Annual fee | Earn rate | Income requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simplii Financial Cash Back Visa Card | $0 | 4% restaurant/bar/coffee shop (first $5,000/yr), 1.5% gas/groceries/drugstore/pre-authorized payments (first $15,000/yr), 0.5% everything else | $15,000 household |
| Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card | $0 | 2% cash back in 2 categories you choose (3 with rewards paid into a Tangerine Savings Account), 0.5% on everything else | $12,000 personal |
The two cards suit different spending. Simplii’s categories are fixed, with annual spending caps on the bonus rates, and its top rate is on restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Tangerine’s cardholder picks the 2% categories from Tangerine’s list, so the card fits spending spread across groceries, gas, recurring bills or other listed categories. Other no-fee cash back cards, and current welcome offers, are compared in the credit card reviews and cash back credit cards in Canada.
GICs
All three sell GICs, non-registered and inside TFSAs and RRSPs. EQ Bank’s terms are on the EQ Bank GIC rates page, and current GIC rates at all three and their rivals are compared in the best GIC rates in Canada.
Registered Accounts
| Account | Simplii | Tangerine | EQ Bank |
|---|---|---|---|
| TFSA savings (posted rate) | 0.40% | 0.30% | 1.50% |
| RRSP savings | Yes | Yes | Yes, 1.50% |
| RRIF savings | No | Yes | No |
| RESP | No | No | No |
| Managed investing | No | Yes (managed portfolios) | No |
Tangerine’s registered lineup includes a RRIF for clients converting an RRSP, which neither of the other two offers. EQ Bank also offers an FHSA savings account. EQ Bank’s registered savings accounts pay their own posted rates, separate from the Personal Account. Simplii’s TFSA and RRSP savings accounts have no minimum balance or monthly fee. Where to hold a TFSA more broadly is covered in TFSA accounts in Canada compared.
Tangerine vs Simplii
Tangerine and Simplii share a structure: each is the digital arm of a Big Five bank, each offers unlimited no-fee chequing, and each gives free access to its parent’s ATM network. The differences come down to five points.
- ATM network. Simplii uses CIBC’s machines; Tangerine uses Scotiabank’s and, abroad, the Global ATM Alliance. The practical test is which bank’s machines are close to home and work.
- Debit card. Tangerine’s Client Card adds Visa Debit for online and foreign purchases; Simplii’s is Interac only.
- Credit card. Simplii’s fixed restaurant-heavy categories against Tangerine’s chosen 2% categories (table above).
- Registered accounts and investing. Tangerine adds a RRIF and managed portfolios; Simplii stops at TFSA and RRSP savings and GICs.
- Mortgages. Tangerine offers mortgages directly. Simplii no longer originates new mortgages itself and connects new applicants with a CIBC mortgage specialist; existing Simplii mortgages can still be renewed.
CDIC coverage also works differently. Simplii is a trade name of CIBC, so, in Simplii’s words, “Deposits made with Simplii Financial do not benefit from additional or separate CDIC deposit insurance coverage from CIBC.” Someone with large deposits at both counts them together against one set of limits.
Both banks charge no monthly fee, so holding both, for example Simplii chequing beside the Tangerine card, costs nothing extra. CIBC’s own accounts are compared with TD’s and RBC’s in CIBC vs TD vs RBC.
Which One Fits
Which of the three fits depends mostly on whether cash and an ATM network matter (Simplii or Tangerine) or interest on every dollar does (EQ Bank); the online banks ranking covers how they combine with other banks.
