Wealthsimple vs EQ Bank 2026 | Complete Comparison

Updated

Wealthsimple and EQ Bank are Canada’s two most popular online financial platforms, but they are built for fundamentally different primary purposes. EQ Bank is a Schedule I federally chartered bank whose core product is savings and GICs — with no fees, no minimums, and a banking experience via its Personal Account that can serve as a substitute for a Big 5 chequing account for many everyday needs, especially for customers who meet the direct-deposit condition for its bonus rate. Wealthsimple is an investing-first platform that also offers banking — its self-directed trading, robo-advisor, crypto, and tax-filing products are what set it apart, and its savings account is a secondary offering alongside its investment products.

The most common strategy among Canadian personal finance readers is not to choose between them but to use both. EQ Bank for the emergency fund and cash savings; Wealthsimple for the TFSA, RRSP, and FHSA investment accounts plus annual tax filing. Together they cost nothing and can replace much of what a Big 5 bank offers, though branch access and in-person service remain gaps for both.

Savings Rates

EQ Bank’s Personal Account pays a 1.00% base rate, or 2.75% for customers who maintain a qualifying recurring direct deposit of at least $2,000/month — this is a real condition, not a rate available on every balance. Its separate Notice Savings Account pays 2.35% (10-day notice) or 2.75% (30-day notice), with no direct-deposit requirement. EQ Bank’s TFSA, RRSP, and FHSA Cash Savings Accounts pay a different, lower rate of 1.50% as of September 2026.

Wealthsimple Cash (Wealthsimple Chequing) pays 1.25% Core (under $100,000 in total Wealthsimple assets), 1.75% Premium ($100,000+), or 2.25% Generation ($500,000+), with Core and Premium earning an extra 0.5% on a qualifying $2,000+ direct deposit. There is no monthly fee at any tier – unlike EQ Bank, Wealthsimple Cash has no TFSA, RRSP, or FHSA option of its own; those are only available through Wealthsimple’s separate investing platform.

GIC Rates

EQ Bank offers a wider range of GIC terms (90 days to 10 years) than a typical Wealthsimple GIC lineup, and supports GICs inside registered accounts (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA). All EQ Bank GICs are non-redeemable — EQ Bank does not offer a cashable GIC option. For the widest GIC rate comparison across all Canadian institutions, the best GIC rates page tracks current offerings.

Everyday Banking

Both platforms offer free everyday banking. EQ Bank’s Personal Account comes with the EQ Bank Card, a prepaid Mastercard — not a traditional Interac debit card — accepted anywhere Mastercard is accepted, with partial fee reimbursement (up to 5 withdrawals/month, up to $5 each) at third-party ATMs in Canada. Wealthsimple Cash uses a prepaid card (transitioning from Mastercard to a Visa Platinum Prepaid card in phases starting September 2026) and reimburses ATM operator surcharges globally, with no cap disclosed. Both card types can occasionally be declined where a specific network or a traditional debit card is required (some landlords, older payment terminals, certain government payment systems).

Investing

This is where Wealthsimple is unmatched among Canadian banking and savings platforms. EQ Bank offers GICs and cash savings within registered accounts but no self-directed stock or ETF trading and no robo-advisor. Wealthsimple’s self-directed trading, fractional shares, managed portfolios, and crypto trading are all housed in the same app as its banking and tax products. For anyone investing in a TFSA or RRSP beyond GICs, Wealthsimple is the clear choice.

Who Should Use Each Platform

EQ Bank is the better choice if your priority is a competitive rate on cash savings — particularly if you can meet the $2,000/month direct-deposit condition for the Personal Account’s 2.75% bonus rate, or you’re comfortable with the Notice Savings Account’s notice period — you want a no-fee spending account, you are a GIC buyer, or you want a simple banking platform without the complexity of investing features.

Wealthsimple is the better choice if you want to invest in stocks, ETFs, or a managed portfolio inside a TFSA, RRSP, or FHSA, you want all your banking, investing, and tax filing in a single ecosystem, or you file your own taxes and want a filing tool in the same app.

Most Canadians benefit from using both. EQ Bank handles savings and everyday banking; Wealthsimple handles registered account investing and tax filing.
