CIBC’s mobile cheque deposit is called eDeposit, in the CIBC Mobile Banking app. CIBC’s eDeposit page says you can deposit up to $250,000 with it, using Canadian dollar cheques drawn on Canadian banks, bank money orders, bank drafts, convenience cheques and certified cheques in Canadian dollars. How quickly you can use the money is a separate matter, set by CIBC’s hold policy and your own access to funds limit, both covered below. CIBC sits alongside other banks in the mobile cheque deposit limits roundup, and the Canadian bank limits hub has CIBC’s cash and transfer caps.

Making an eDeposit
CIBC asks you to sign the back of the cheque and print “For deposit only” under the signature before you start. Then, in the CIBC Mobile Banking app, select eDeposit, photograph the front and back on a flat surface, enter the amount, choose the account and select Deposit. Keep the cheque for at least 5 days afterwards; CIBC’s Electronic Access Agreement says 5 calendar days from the date of deposit. Photo tips that apply in any bank’s app are in the mobile cheque deposit guide.
Cut-off times. Under the Electronic Access Agreement, an eDeposit made after 6:00 p.m. Eastern takes the next business day’s transaction date, and one made after 9:30 p.m. Eastern is processed the next business day. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays aren’t business days.
When the funds are available
CIBC credits an eDeposit to your account as soon as it receives the image, but under its Electronic Access Agreement “availability and access to the funds will be subject to CIBC’s Hold Policy and your access to funds limit.” On its eDeposit page CIBC says the funds will be available within 4 business days.
Your access to funds limit (CIBC also calls it the Access to Deposited Funds Limit) is set for your account when it is opened, shows in CIBC Online Banking and the app, and can be raised on request; CIBC’s phone line (1-800-465-2422 (1-800-465-CIBC)) or a branch handles that, and in some cases a hold can be shortened for a long-standing client at CIBC’s discretion.
The federal maximums that cap how long any bank can hold a cheque, and the exceptions to them, are explained in how long a cheque takes to clear.
Cheques eDeposit can’t take
A US dollar or foreign-currency cheque, or a deposit over the eDeposit maximum, goes to a teller at a CIBC branch or, for Canadian dollar cheques, a CIBC ATM. Certified cheques and drafts can be released sooner than personal cheques; a teller can say at the time of deposit.
Simplii Financial, CIBC’s digital bank, has its own app deposit and uses the same CIBC ATMs; see the Simplii mobile cheque deposit page.
