RBC Wire Transfer Limit (2026): Domestic and International

Updated

At RBC, two products move larger sums and they work differently. A traditional wire transfer is arranged in branch by personal clients, has no published cap and carries RBC’s wire fees. RBC International Money Transfer is a separate online service for sending abroad, with a daily limit and a $0 transfer fee. RBC’s SWIFT code for incoming international wires is ROYCCAT2.

RBC wire transfer fees

RBC’s fee-schedule document doesn’t list traditional wire fees and points clients to rbc.com/wire-fees instead, which sets them out as follows:

TransferFee
Outgoing wireStarting at $45.00 CAD (CAD accounts) / $45.00 USD (USD accounts) / EUR33 / GBP27 / $263 HKD, by account currency. A separate, lower starting rate of $35.00 CAD/USD / EUR26 / GBP21 / $205 HKD applies specifically when an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is NOT provided for a wire going to a country that uses IBANs – the two rows are for different scenarios, not a surcharge on top of each other. A debit advice/receipt costs $5 CAD/USD-equivalent by phone/fax, or $3 CAD/USD-equivalent by mail.
Incoming wireFree from an RBC Royal Bank unit in Canada, and free from any other financial institution worldwide for amounts under $50 CAD/USD (or EUR37/GBP30/$293 HKD equivalent). Above that threshold: $17.00 CAD/USD (or EUR12/GBP10 equivalent), starting at (ask RBC for further details). A credit advice for an incoming wire costs $5.00 CAD/USD-equivalent by phone/fax, or $3.00 CAD/USD-equivalent by mail.

Banks along the payment chain, and the recipient’s bank, can take their own fees, and a wire that converts currency carries an exchange-rate spread that RBC does not publish as a flat percentage, so ask for the rate when you send. RBC’s account fees are in the RBC fees guide.

Sending a traditional wire at an RBC branch

  1. Bring government-issued photo ID.
  2. Bring the recipient’s details in writing: full legal name, bank name and address, and either the transit and institution numbers (within Canada) or the SWIFT/BIC code and IBAN where used (abroad), plus the account number.
  3. The teller sends the wire and gives you a receipt showing the fee and exchange rate. Large wires can bring extra identity and source-of-funds questions.

The guide to wire transfers in Canada explains how wires work at any bank, and how long a wire transfer takes covers timing.

Sending with RBC International Money Transfer

The service needs an eligible RBC personal chequing or savings account. Sign in to RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app, open International Money Transfer from the transfers menu, enter the recipient’s banking details for their country and an amount from $100 up to the $50,000 daily limit, then check the exchange rate before confirming. The rate is where RBC earns its margin, since the transfer fee is $0.

Some senders ask for an IBAN; Canada doesn’t use IBANs, so give the transit and account numbers instead, and ask RBC which bank address to provide. The RBC routing number page explains RBC’s institution number and how to find your transit number.

Domestic payments under RBC’s e-Transfer cap

RBC’s e-Transfer limit is a fixed daily amount that RBC won’t raise, so payments inside Canada above it need a wire or a draft; the RBC e-Transfer limit page has the figure and where to see your own limits. For a home or car purchase, an RBC branch can issue a bank draft instead, and how to get a bank draft in Canada explains when sellers ask for one. RBC’s ATM, debit and mobile-deposit limits are in the bank limits hub.
