Scotiabank’s cheque deposit feature in its app is called Mobile Deposit. Scotiabank doesn’t publish one per-cheque or daily limit for it: the Help Centre says your limit is set individually and can be viewed in the Scotiabank app. How Scotiabank compares with other banks is in the mobile cheque deposit limits roundup; the directory of bank limits has Scotiabank’s other caps.
Where to find the limit
In the Scotiabank app, go to More > Profile and settings > Manage transaction limits. The mobile deposit limits sit there beside the ABM withdrawal, debit purchase and Interac e-Transfer limits covered on the Scotiabank ATM withdrawal limit page.
A limit lower than expected is more likely on a newer account or one with returned items in its history. Scotiabank can review it by phone or at a branch; contact details are on the Scotiabank customer service page.
Cheques that need a branch
Mobile Deposit takes Canadian dollar cheques. A US dollar or other foreign-currency cheque goes to a branch, and a post-dated cheque can’t be deposited until its date. Photographing the cheque and entering the amount work as in any banking app, set out in the mobile cheque deposit guide.
When the money is available
Scotiabank is bound by the same federal rules on cheque holds as other banks, with the caps for non-branch deposits applying to Mobile Deposit; they are explained in how long a cheque takes to clear. Scotiabank can hold a deposit longer in the cases those rules allow, such as a new account or a cheque it has reason to think won’t clear. The release date for each deposit shows in the app.
If Mobile Deposit won’t take the cheque
A Scotiabank ABM that accepts deposits, or a teller at a branch, takes cheques the app refuses or that are over the limit. A teller deposit isn’t tied to the app’s limit, though the same hold rules apply. Whether a deposit counts toward an account’s monthly transaction allowance depends on the package; the packages are compared in Scotiabank’s fees guide.
