ATM Withdrawal and Debit Card Limits by Bank in Canada

Updated

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) says your financial institution may set a daily dollar limit on what you can withdraw with your debit card, and that the limits can differ for cash withdrawals, in-store purchases and online purchases. The tables below give each bank’s own figures or its own words where it publishes them, with a link to its page. At several big banks the limit belongs to your card and shows in online banking or the app, as their rows and the change table say.

What is the daily ATM withdrawal limit at each bank?

The figures are each bank’s own, for its own card.

Some rows add that the ATM itself may set a lower limit than the card’s, and the lower one then applies.

What are the daily debit purchase and tap limits?

FCAC lists in-store purchases and online purchases among the kinds of transaction that may have their own limit, so a bank’s purchase limit can differ from its ATM limit above.

Tapping has its own ceiling: FCAC says you’ll be asked for your PIN when a tap takes you past your total contactless spending limit. The rows that give a per-tap amount show it beside the daily limit.

Can you see or change your ATM and debit limits?

Where a bank says how to see or change its limits, its own words are below. FCAC adds that a financial institution may check your credit history to set a card’s daily limit.

For a bank with no row here, FCAC points to the financial institution itself for a card’s daily limit and the fees that may apply.

How can you get more cash than your ATM limit allows?

  • A temporary change. Some banks let you raise a limit for a while, and one lists a phone line for a withdrawal above its maximum; their words are in the change table.
  • Inside a branch. RBC says its client card daily limits are for transactions made outside of a branch.
  • Without cash. A large payment can go another way: see e-Transfer limits by bank, wire transfers and how to get a bank draft.

A charge for using an ATM that doesn’t belong to your own financial institution is a fee, not a limit; FCAC says you may pay one.

Why was my debit card declined?

Scotiabank’s help page lists the reasons a debit card may be declined, including these:

  • A limit is reached. The daily or weekly transaction limit has been used up; the tables above give each bank’s where it publishes one.
  • Not enough available funds. For example, a recent deposit may be on hold; pending transactions and holds explains the available balance, and overdraft protection has its own page.
  • Wrong card details or PIN. The details or the PIN were entered incorrectly.
  • A card not yet activated. A new or replacement card hasn’t been activated.
  • A closed card. The card was closed or cancelled, or it has expired.
  • A blocked card. The card is temporarily blocked, for example after it was reported lost or stolen, or after unusual purchasing activity; see a frozen account and a lost or stolen card.

FCAC adds two more: some banks and credit unions freeze a card used outside where you normally travel, and a tap past your contactless spending limit asks for your PIN (tap limits).

If the funds are there and the transaction limits haven’t been reached, Scotiabank’s next step is to call the number on the back of the card.
