Bank Holidays in Canada 2026: When Banks Are Closed

Updated

Direct deposits, pre-authorized debits, cheques and wires move from one bank to another through Payments Canada’s systems. Payments Canada systems are operational Monday to Friday, except statutory holidays. Payments Canada’s closure schedule for this year is below, and one bank’s own calendar closes its branches on more days than the schedule lists.

Which days are banks closed in 2026?

The closure days come from Payments Canada’s system closure schedule:

  • Thursday, January 1 (New Year's Day)
  • Friday, April 3 (Good Friday)
  • Monday, May 18 (Victoria Day)
  • Wednesday, July 1 (Canada Day)
  • Monday, September 7 (Labour Day)
  • Wednesday, September 30 (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation)
  • Monday, October 12 (Thanksgiving Day)
  • Wednesday, November 11 (Remembrance Day)
  • Friday, December 25 (Christmas Day)
  • Monday, December 28 (closure for Boxing Day, Saturday, December 26)

One bank’s holiday calendar also closes its branches on the day after New Year’s Day in Quebec only, on Family Day in several provinces, on Quebec’s Fête nationale, and on the August civic holiday outside Quebec and PEI, so a branch’s own closing days are on its bank’s site.

Are banks open on Family Day, Easter Monday or a weekend?

Payments Canada’s schedule lists federal holidays: its table is headed “Federal holiday”. Family Day, Easter Monday and the August civic holiday aren’t general holidays under the Canada Labour Code (federal holidays), and they aren’t on this year’s list above.

One bank’s calendar, described under this year’s list, closes its branches on some of those days in some provinces and not in others. Where Family Day is a statutory holiday is on is it a stat holiday.

On weekends, Payments Canada’s systems are closed, since they run Monday to Friday. Each bank’s page, linked below, gives its hours where it states them.

Banks are a federally regulated industry, so the paid general holidays bank staff are entitled to are the Canada Labour Code’s list of general holidays. The stat holiday pay calculator works out holiday pay.

What counts as a business day, and what waits for one?

Payments Canada’s systems run on weekdays that aren’t on the closure list, so a payment that moves between banks through them doesn’t move on a Saturday, a Sunday or a closure day. Payments Canada says a cheque deposited on a Saturday isn’t cleared until the following Monday evening. One bank’s holiday page says: “Payments scheduled on a statutory holiday will be processed the next business day”.

Where are each bank’s usual hours?

Each bank’s phone lines and help, and its hours where it states them, are on its page:
