CIBC’s institution number is 010. This three-digit code identifies the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce on every Canadian electronic payment, at every CIBC branch. Combined with the five-digit transit of the branch that holds your account it makes your routing number, which CIBC’s void cheques and most direct deposit forms write as XXXXX-010.
CIBC’s SWIFT/BIC code is CIBCCATT. Other banks’ numbers are in the routing number guides.
CIBC and Simplii Financial
Simplii Financial is a division of CIBC and shares its institution number, but Simplii accounts use Simplii’s own transit, not a CIBC branch transit, and the two aren’t interchangeable. The transit that applies to Simplii accounts is on the Simplii routing number page.
Looking up your CIBC transit
Directory listings of CIBC branch transits may not match your account, particularly one opened online or moved between branches, so CIBC’s own screens are the place to check.
CIBC Online Banking: sign in at cibc.com, select the account and click Account Details. Transit, institution and account numbers are displayed together, and a void cheque PDF can be downloaded from the same page for a payroll department.
CIBC mobile app: tap the account, then the info icon or Account Details, where you can save or share a digital void cheque.
A CIBC cheque: along the bottom, the cheque number comes first, then the five-digit transit, then 010, then the account number. Reading the numbers on a cheque labels each group.
A CIBC Banking Centre: staff can confirm your numbers or print a void cheque with government-issued photo ID.
No public list of CIBC branch transits exists on CIBC’s site. Other ways to confirm yours are in how to find your routing number.
CIBC in a 9-digit routing field
Some payroll systems and government forms want a single nine-digit number. For CIBC it is a zero, then 010, then your transit, five digits including any leading zeros. The 9-digit EFT format explains when a form needs this version.
What CIBC asks a wire sender to provide
CIBC’s own instructions for receiving an international wire list:
- SWIFT/BIC code: CIBCCATT
- Your name as it appears on the account
- Transit number: all five digits, including any zeros, from your account details
- Account number: CIBC’s wire instructions describe it as 7 digits; your account details show the exact length for your product
- Bank address: the full address of your own branch (street, city, province, postal code and country), the branch your transit belongs to, rather than CIBC’s head office at CIBC Square, 81 Bay Street, Toronto
CIBC may add a foreign currency handling fee to an incoming wire in a currency other than Canadian dollars. Personal clients can’t send wires online at CIBC; an outgoing wire is arranged at a CIBC Banking Centre. Fees and caps for sending are on CIBC’s wire limits and fees page, and the wire transfer guide covers international wires in general.
CIBC Investor’s Edge
CIBC Investor’s Edge accounts have their own account numbers. Linking one to an outside institution uses the details shown in Investor’s Edge rather than your banking transit.
Where the numbers are needed
An employer uses your transit, 010 and account number for payroll direct deposit, the CRA uses them for direct deposit of refunds and benefits, and billers use them for pre-authorized debits. Interac e-Transfers don’t need them. What a routing number is explains each part.
For CIBC’s accounts and fees, see the CIBC review.
