Canadian Bank Codes: Institution Numbers 001, 002, 003, 004, 010 and More

Updated

001 is BMO’s institution number, 002 is Scotiabank’s, 003 RBC’s, 004 TD’s, 006 National Bank’s and 010 CIBC’s, a number Simplii Financial uses too. The institution number, which TD also calls the bank code, is the 3-digit part of a Canadian routing number that names the institution; the 5-digit transit beside it names the branch. The routing numbers guide explains each number and where to find yours.

Bank codes in number order

Where this site has a page or a section below for a bank, the bank’s name in its row links to it.

899Servus Credit UnionAlberta credit union

Two codes appear twice: CIBC and Simplii both give 010, and Vancity and Coast Capital both give 809. The routing numbers guide shows how an institution number and a transit combine, on a cheque and in the electronic form.

National Bank

National Bank of Canada’s institution number is 006, paired with the transit of the branch that holds your account. Its SWIFT code is BNDCCAMMINT. National Bank gives that code for Canadian-dollar and other-currency transfers, and adds an ABA routing number for US dollars.

Canadian Western Bank, number 030, is now part of National Bank. The table’s row for it says what that means for a former CWB account. National Bank’s accounts and fees are on its bank page.

Simplii Financial

Simplii Financial, a trademark and division of CIBC, gives its institution number as 010 and its transit as 30800. At CIBC, the transit is the 5-digit number of the CIBC Banking Centre that holds the account.

Online banking and the mobile app show your account number, branch and transit. For a void cheque: Write VOID across a blank cheque for your account, or print the direct deposit form in online banking.

For a wire, Simplii’s instructions name CIBC’s SWIFT code, CIBCCATT, with Simplii Financial as the receiving institution; the SWIFT codes page lists it beside the other banks.

Tangerine

Tangerine gives its institution number as 614 and its transit as 00152. Tangerine Bank is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Bank of Nova Scotia, yet that number is its own, not Scotiabank’s 002.

Online, the Void Cheque button on your chequing account gives a printable PDF. Tangerine says it has no SWIFT or BIC code, since it neither sends nor receives wire transfers; the SWIFT codes page lists the other accounts in that position.

Online accounts that show your numbers in the app

KOHO, Neo and Oaken have no row in the table.

  • EQ Bank: for a void cheque: Generate a void cheque by signing in to the EQ Bank mobile app or online banking.
  • KOHO: in the web portal, Set up direct deposits under Add Funds shows the account, transit and institution numbers. KOHO says your money sits with Peoples Trust, whose own number is in the next table.
  • Neo: Neo points you to the account, transit and institution numbers in your account, with a PDF of them to download. It says these details recently changed for Neo Everyday and Neo High-Interest Savings accounts.
  • Oaken Financial: a trademark of Home Bank, which Home Trust Company owns.
  • Wealthsimple: its app’s account details show the institution, transit and account numbers, and Wealthsimple gives a single routing number for forms that ask for one. For a void cheque: In the app, tap the chequing account, then Account details, then Download void cheque.

Numbers that belong to the company holding a brand’s money

Some online brands keep customer money at a trust company, or are a trademark of another bank. Payments Canada’s list gives these companies under their own names and numbers:

383Peoples Bank of CanadaPayments Canada's own listing. This is not the number of any brand that banks through Peoples Bank of Canada unless that brand publishes it.

Where the full list comes from

Payments Canada publishes the complete list as “Institution numbers and clearing arrangements”, last updated October 7, 2026. Its other directory is Payments Canada's Financial institutions file, an electronic directory of routing numbers for deposit-taking institutions in Canada. Payments Canada’s list holds many more institutions than the table here, credit unions among them.
