RBC Royal Bank’s institution number is 003, and RBC gives ROYCCAT2 as its SWIFT code for wires sent from inside or outside Canada. Your transit is the number of your own branch, 5 digits, including any leading zeros, and RBC account numbers are 7 digits long. This page puts the numbers side by side, then covers where RBC shows yours, the void cheque, a wire from abroad, former HSBC accounts and RBC’s phone line.
RBC numbers at a glance
| Number | RBC |
|---|---|
| Institution number | 003 |
| Transit number | 5 digits, including any leading zeros |
| Account number | 7 digits |
| Routing number on a cheque (transit, then institution) | XXXXX-003Transit number, a dash, then institution number: 8 digits |
| Routing number, electronic form (one box: 0, institution, transit) | 0003XXXXXA leading zero, then the institution number, then the transit number: 9 digits |
| SWIFT/BIC code | ROYCCAT2 |
A cheque prints the transit, a dash, then the institution number, while Payments Canada’s electronic format runs a zero, the institution number and then the transit. Both shapes, and what each number does, are laid out in the routing numbers guide.
Where to find your RBC transit and account number
RBC points clients to one screen for all three numbers:
RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app: sign in, select the account and choose Receive a Wire Transfer, which shows the transit, institution and account numbers.
RBC’s branch locator can also be searched by transit number, for a payer who has a transit and wants the branch behind it. On paper, the numbers usually sit in the line printed along the bottom of a cheque, explained on where the numbers are on a cheque.
RBC void cheque and direct deposit form
RBC’s tutorial gets the void cheque from Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app:
Online Banking: Account Services, then View and Print Void Cheque. RBC Mobile app: tap the account, Details, then Get a Void Cheque and download the PDF.
According to RBC’s tutorial, the PDF shows the transit first, then the institution number, then the account number. For a paper cheque you void yourself, see how to void a cheque; payroll and pension deposits are covered in setting up direct deposit, and payments from the CRA in CRA direct deposit.
Receiving a wire at RBC: SWIFT code and details
RBC’s wire transfer page lists what the person sending you money needs from you:
Your transit number (5 digits, including all zeros) and account number (7 digits); your personal home address; RBC's institution number; RBC's SWIFT BIC; and your RBC branch's phone number, address and transit number.
For a wire in certain foreign currencies, RBC lists a different bank name and SWIFT code (or ABA number) to give the sender.
Those currency rows are on RBC’s page and aren’t repeated here. Other banks’ codes are on SWIFT codes for Canadian banks, RBC’s wire fees and limits on the wire transfers table, and the sender’s side on sending money to Canada.
Former HSBC Canada accounts
HSBC Bank Canada amalgamated with RBC on March 29, 2024. Payments Canada says RBC's 003 is the number used to settle after that date, and 016 stays in use for exchange until March 31, 2028.
Payments Canada’s list adds that RBC would keep using 016 for exchange for one year from that date, and a later note extends that to March 31, 2028. Payments Canada names RBC as the continuing member.
RBC hours, phone and help
RBC’s customer service page lists 1-800-769-2511 for everyday banking, accounts, client cards, lines of credit, loans and mortgages. For branches, RBC’s locator has filters for branches open Saturdays or evenings. A lost or stolen card is covered in RBC’s card help, a complaint in bank complaints, and holiday closures in bank holidays.
RBC’s accounts and fees are on the RBC banking overview, and other banks’ numbers are on institution numbers.
