RBC’s SWIFT code is ROYCCAT2, TD’s TDOMCATTTOR, BMO’s BOFMCAM2, CIBC’s CIBCCATT, Scotiabank’s NOSCCATT, National Bank’s BNDCCAMMINT and Desjardins’s CCDQCAMM. The code points a payment to the bank; the person sending it also needs your account number and your branch’s transit and institution numbers. Each bank’s own page has the rest of its wire details, and Tangerine, KOHO and EQ Bank say they have no code or offer no wires.
SWIFT codes of Canadian banks
Each code is the one the bank’s own pages give. The last column links the bank’s full numbers.

What is a SWIFT code?
Payments Canada describes SWIFT Business Identifier Codes, or BICs, as codes that identify financial institutions and carry payment routing information in a format recognized around the world. They go by “SWIFT code” because the SWIFT network uses them for international wires, and TD notes that in Canada “BIC” can mean the same thing.
Desjardins describes the code as “a unique 8- or 11-character code that represents the financial institution, country, location and sometimes the branch”. In the table, TD’s and National Bank’s codes are the 11-character kind and the rest have 8.
The code names the bank, not your account: in the list below, the account number and the branch’s routing details sit on separate lines.
What a sender abroad needs
Payments Canada lists what the sending person’s branch has to know about whoever receives a wire, so this is what you pass to someone paying you from abroad:
- your name as spelled on the account, and your address
- your account number, with no spaces or special characters
- your branch’s name and address, postal code included
- your branch’s routing information: A 3-digit institution number and a 5-digit branch transit number
- your bank’s SWIFT code, where it has one
- the amount, the value date and who pays the fees
Banks add their own details: RBC asks for the transit “including all zeros”, and CIBC lists a Canadian clearing code. How a wire is sent, what it costs and how long it takes are on wire transfers in Canada.
Does Canada use IBAN?
TD says it has no IBAN, as IBANs are “not used by financial institutions in North America”, and National Bank says an IBAN “only identifies European banks” and can’t be used to identify it. Desjardins calls the IBAN an account identifier “mainly used in Europe”.
In its place, a sender uses the SWIFT code together with your account, transit and institution numbers from the list above. Sending a wire to a country that does use IBANs is covered on wire transfers in Canada.
US-dollar and other-currency wires
Several banks list extra details for a wire in US dollars or another currency:
- RBC gives a different bank name and SWIFT, BIC or ABA number for certain foreign currencies.
- TD says a sender of US dollars may need the details of TD’s US correspondent bank.
- BMO names a correspondent bank, BMO Bank N.A., for wires coming from the US.
- CIBC says to use Wells Fargo as an intermediary bank for US dollars sent from the US.
- National Bank adds an ABA routing number for US dollars.
The codes themselves are on each bank’s own site; the bank pages linked from the table say where the bank publishes them.
Banks and accounts with no SWIFT code
- Tangerine: “We don’t have a SWIFT or BIC code because we don’t send or receive wire transfers”.
- KOHO says it is a financial service rather than a bank, with no SWIFT code or IBAN, and can’t accept international wire transfers.
- EQ Bank says it is “not able to offer wire transfers at the moment”.
For Wealthsimple and Manulife Bank, the table shows a code as not stated. Other ways to receive money from abroad are on transferring money to Canada.
How to check a SWIFT code
Payments Canada says BIC/SWIFT codes are free to look up on the SWIFT website. When a recipient gives you their routing information, Payments Canada says it can be checked for most Canadian financial institutions in its Financial Institutions Branch Directory. The code a bank tells its own customers to give is on the bank’s page, linked from the table’s last column where this site has one.
