TD Canada Trust’s institution number is 004. Every TD account in Canada uses it, at every branch. What’s specific to your account is the 5-digit transit of the branch that holds it, so a TD routing number on a Canadian form reads XXXXX-004, with your transit first and then TD’s three digits.
TD’s SWIFT/BIC code is TDOMCATTTOR. The quickest place to see your own transit is EasyWeb or the TD app, which put it right beside your account number. The routing number guides have the same details for other banks.
Getting your TD transit from EasyWeb or the app
In EasyWeb (easyweb.td.com), select the account and choose Account Details (or View Account Details). TD lists the transit, institution and account numbers together, and the Direct Deposit Form on that screen downloads as a PDF void cheque.
In the TD app, open the account and tap the “i” icon or Account Details. From there, Share banking details or Direct deposit creates a digital void cheque you can email to an employer.
If you have TD cheques, the transit is the five digits that follow the cheque number along the bottom, with 004 and your account number after it; the guide to reading the numbers on a cheque labels them. A TD branch can also print a void cheque or direct deposit form when you bring photo ID.
TD keeps branch transits private to each account rather than publishing a directory, so a transit copied from a list online may not be yours. How to find your routing number has the other ways to check.
When a form asks for a 9-digit number
Cross-border employers and US-built HR software sometimes have a single routing box. For a TD account the 9-digit EFT version is a zero, then 004, then your five-digit transit. Where the form has separate boxes for transit and institution, enter the two numbers separately instead.
A form that asks for a “bank code” or “sort code” for a Canadian TD account usually means the institution number, 004.
Receiving an international wire at TD
The SWIFT code TD uses for international wires is TDOMCATTTOR, the full 11-character form; the 8-character short form TDOMCATT is also valid.
Along with the SWIFT code, a sender needs your full legal name, your transit, your account number and a bank address. TD’s instructions for incoming wires ask for the address of your own branch, the one your transit belongs to, rather than a head-office address; EasyWeb, the app or a cheque will show it. When a sender abroad asks for a “routing number”, they usually mean the SWIFT code plus your transit and account number.
What TD charges and how much you can send are on TD’s wire limits and fees page; the wire transfer guide explains how international wires work.
TD Direct Investing accounts
TD Direct Investing accounts use TD’s institution number but have their own transit and account numbers, separate from your TD Canada Trust branch. To link a Direct Investing TFSA, RRSP or non-registered account to another institution, take the details from inside TD Direct Investing; your chequing account’s branch transit won’t route to it, and the transfer will fail.
Where TD routing details are used
Your transit, 004 and account number are what an employer uses to pay you by direct deposit, what the CRA uses for direct deposit of tax refunds and benefits, and what a biller uses to set up a pre-authorized debit. Interac e-Transfers go by email or phone number instead. What each number identifies is in what a routing number is.
If a TD direct deposit is rejected, the transit is the first thing to check against EasyWeb, along with whether the account is still open.
The bank’s accounts and fees are covered in the TD review.
