The first table lists the regular rates on high-interest savings accounts (HISAs) at Canadian banks and online banks: the top of the account’s tiers or plans, with what that rate takes and the tiers beside it. Promotional rates sit in a table of their own because, as FCAC explains, an introductory rate runs for a set period and the rate after it may be lower. What a HISA is, and what a balance earns, are covered on the savings accounts page.
What do high-interest savings accounts pay at each bank?
As FCAC notes, the advertised interest rate is usually an annual rate. The “Top regular rate” column shows the top of the account’s tiers or plans, without a promotion; the cell beside it says first what that rate takes, then lists the tiers from the bank’s page.

Which promotional rates are on offer?
FCAC describes high-interest introductory rates that run for a certain period, after which the interest rate may be lower. The table shows the offer’s rate and terms in the bank’s words; where a bank’s terms say what rate follows or when the offer ends, its cell says so.
| Bank | Promotional or bonus rate, with its conditions | Source |
|---|---|---|
| BMO | 5.00% for the first 4 months on balances up to $1,000,000 when a new chequing account (Performance, Premium, Blue Rewards, Plus or Practical) and a Savings Amplifier Account are opened; BMO calls it a limited time offer; the savings interest rate of 0.45% applies after the first 4 months | BMO's page |
| CIBC | Special offer: 4.60% for 3 months when you open your first CIBC eAdvantage Savings Account, limits apply. Smart Interest, an ongoing feature: an additional 0.05% on balances up to $200,000 when you save $200 or more in a month (the account balance on the last business day of the month is $200 or more than on the last business day of the previous month), limits apply | CIBC's page |
| EQ Bank | Personal Account: 2.75% bonus interest rate (1.50% base rate plus 1.25%) for customers who add and maintain qualifying recurring direct deposits of at least $2,000 a month | EQ Bank's page |

EQ Bank’s row is a bonus rather than a time-limited offer: it keeps paying as long as the qualifying direct deposits continue each month, as the EQ Bank section explains. Cash offers for opening an account are on the bank account promotions page.
How do tiers and conditions change the rate you earn?
FCAC explains that some institutions apply two or more interest rates to a balance, and that the higher rate may be paid on all the money in the account, on all of it only once savings pass a set amount, or only on the part of the balance above that amount.
Example. An account pays 1% on a balance up to $10,000 and 2% above it, and holds $20,000 for a year (simple interest, before compounding). If the higher rate covers the whole balance once it passes the threshold, the year’s interest is $400. If it covers only the part above the threshold, it is $300.
At the banks in the tables, these things set the rate:
- The balance. TD pays interest on the entire daily closing balance at the rate of the tier that balance falls in. CIBC’s and Simplii’s rates are also set by balance tiers.
- Money held elsewhere at the bank. Scotiabank’s HISA rate rises with the client’s Total Relationship Balance, which adds the HISA to the client’s other eligible Scotiabank accounts, and the HISA earns no interest on days that balance is under its threshold.
- A plan or membership. KOHO’s rate depends on the plan chosen, and Neo’s on the membership rather than the balance; the plans’ monthly fees are in the interest and fees table.
- Notice before a withdrawal. EQ Bank’s Notice Savings Account sets its rate by whether 10 or 30 days’ notice is given before a withdrawal (EQ Bank).
TD’s figure in the first table is its Standard Posted Rate: its Boosted Rate pays more on “balances of $5,000 or more”, in TD’s words, but needs an eligible TD chequing account with at least 2 of 3 qualifying monthly transactions on it.
How is the interest worked out and paid, and what does the account cost?
This table gives each bank’s own description of how it calculates and pays interest, with the fees it lists for the account. FCAC notes that accounts may compound interest monthly or daily; how a balance grows over time is on the savings interest calculator.
