Direct Deposit Lead Times in Canada: When Money Arrives

Updated

This page covers when a direct deposit actually reaches your account: payroll lead times, the hours banks post deposits, and federal payment dates. To get direct deposit started with an employer, the CRA or Service Canada, see how to set up direct deposit; the other guides to e-Transfers, wires and cheques are in the transfers section.

How Direct Deposit Works in Canada

Direct deposit uses Canada’s Automated Clearing Settlement System (ACSS) operated by Payments Canada. Payments are batched and processed overnight on business days.

When Pay Arrives

Employer SubmissionFunds Available

WednesdayThursday morning
ThursdayFriday morning
FridayMonday morning

Assumes timely submission by employer and no holidays.

How this actually works: your employer doesn’t send money on your pay date itself. They submit a payment file to their payroll processor (ADP, Ceridian, etc.) 1–3 business days in advance. That processor sends a batch file through ACSS, and the funds are already staged and released to your account during the bank’s overnight batch on pay day. It’s a pre-scheduled release, not a real-time push, which is why deposits land in the early morning rather than throughout the day.
