Store and retailer credit cards in Canada

Updated

The table below compares credit cards issued with a retailer’s name by annual fee, what each earns at its store and elsewhere, and the minimum income its provider states. Whether a store’s own card pays off against a general card depends on how much of the spending goes to that store; the worked example below finds the share at which the two come out even. Checkout and welcome offers on store cards are left out here; how welcome offers work is explained in credit card sign-up bonuses.

Store credit cards compared

The CIBC Costco Mastercard is CIBC’s card, the Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard’s statements are issued by MBNA, and the two Walmart Rewards cards are issued by Fairstone Bank of Canada.

When is a store’s own card worth it?

The Amazon.ca and Walmart cards’ top rates are tied to their stores, so a general card with a flat rate above a store card’s base rate can come out ahead once enough spending goes elsewhere. The example below uses a no-fee card with a flat rate on other purchases, since that is the case where the share of store spending decides; general no-fee cards are ranked on a full month of assumed spending on the no-fee cash back ranking.

At what share of spending does the store card pull ahead? The spending here is made up for the arithmetic; the rates are each card’s own. Compare the Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard, at its Prime rate of 2.5% at Amazon.ca and 1% elsewhere, with the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard at 1.5% on other purchases without a Rogers service; neither charges an annual fee, and Prime’s own cost is not counted. Over 12 months:

  • With $100 a month at Amazon.ca and $1,400 elsewhere, the Amazon.ca card returns $198 a year and the Rogers card $270, so the store card returns $72 less.
  • With $600 a month at Amazon.ca and $900 elsewhere, the Amazon.ca card returns $288 and the Rogers card $270, so the store card returns $18 more.

The two cards come out even when the share of spending at Amazon.ca is the general card’s rate minus the store card’s everything-else rate, divided by the store card’s two rates’ difference: about 33% at these rates. Above that share the store card returns more; below it, the general card does.

Best credit card for Amazon.ca

The table assumes $200 a month at Amazon.ca and no other spending: $0 on groceries, $0 on gas, $0 on dining, $0 on recurring bills, $0 on transit, $0 at drugstores, $0 on travel and $0 on all other purchases. Each general card’s Amazon.ca purchases are valued at its rate for other purchases, and the Amazon.ca card at its rate without Prime: 1.5% back on eligible purchases at Amazon.ca and Whole Foods Market stores without a Prime membership.

A dash means this table shows no figure for that card. Yearly values use the spending assumed above and each card's published rates and caps. Welcome offers, first-year fee waivers and fee rebates tied to a bank account, banking package, profession or another card are not included.

With an eligible Prime membership, the Amazon.ca card’s store rate gives $60 a year at the same spending. Without Prime, among the cards with a yearly value, first place at this spending goes to Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard and Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard, tied. Points from the card go to Amazon.ca gift cards, and the card needs an Amazon.ca account that is open and in good standing.

Shopping online with a credit card

What a card’s purchase protection and extended warranty cover is explained in the credit card insurance guide. How to dispute a charge for an online order that goes wrong is on how to dispute a credit card charge.

How this comparison works

Store cards here are cards a provider issues with a retailer’s name, listed rather than ranked. Yearly values appear in the two worked sections, each on its own stated spending. Cards whose figures aren’t confirmed are named without figures. The full method is in how we rank cards.
