Credit card travel insurance in Canada: what it covers and its limits

Updated

On the cards quoted below, travel insurance comes with conditions, limitations and exclusions set out in the card’s certificate of insurance, which sets the limits, the days covered and who is insured. The two tables under travel insurance by card list the emergency medical and trip cover that the cards’ providers state, by annual fee, and the conditions section gives the certificate terms that decide whether a claim is paid.

What credit card travel insurance covers

A card’s travel insurance is made up of several kinds of cover, listed one after another in its certificate. The lines below are what Amex states for one card, the American Express Gold Rewards Card, so the amounts are that card’s:

  • Emergency medical cover is up to $5,000,000 per insured person per trip for the first 15 consecutive days of a trip (the certificate counts the departure date), for insured persons aged 64 or under on the departure date. The insured persons are the Cardmember, the Cardmember's spouse or the Cardmember's dependent child who have a valid government health insurance plan, whether travelling together or not. Amex's certificate says a top-up can be bought through the Enrollment Centre, charged to the card.
  • Trip cancellation: covers the non-refundable and non-transferable portion of travel arrangements charged to the card before departure if the trip is cancelled for a covered reason, up to $1,500 per insured person per trip and $3,000 for all insured persons combined. The certificate adds that cover applies when any portion of the prepaid arrangements is charged to the card or bought with Membership Rewards points.
  • Flight delay: if a confirmed scheduled departure is delayed four hours or more, or the insured person is denied boarding because of overbooking with no alternative transportation within four hours, the certificate pays reasonable living expenses and sundry items during the delay. A missed connection caused by a delayed incoming flight is covered when the airline offers no onward transportation within four hours. The maximum for flight delay and emergency baggage delay combined is $500 per occurrence. Cover begins when the full fare of the airline ticket is charged to the card. The trip cancellation and interruption certificate also covers trip delay: when a covered cause during the trip delays you beyond your scheduled return date.
  • Emergency baggage delay: if checked-in baggage is not delivered within six hours of arrival at the outbound flight destination, the certificate pays reasonable and necessary emergency purchases of essential clothing and sundry items made within four days of arrival, before the baggage is returned. It shares the $500 flight and baggage delay limit per occurrence. It does not apply to a flight returning to the insured person's place of residence.
  • Travel accident: accidental death and dismemberment cover up to $500,000 per covered person when the full fare of a plane, train, ship or bus ticket is charged to the card, for an accident while riding solely as a passenger on a common carrier (the certificate defines a common carrier conveyance as other than a rental vehicle). It excludes injury received while driving, riding in, boarding or alighting from a rental vehicle.
  • Hotel burglary: covered for up to $500 against the loss of most personal items (excluding cash) if the accommodation is broken into, when the accommodation is charged to the card. Cover applies per burglary occurrence to loss of or damage to personal items when the accommodation is broken into while the insured person is registered as a guest; cash and currency are excluded.

Other cards’ limits for medical, cancellation, interruption, delay and baggage cover are in the tables below. Collision and damage cover for a rented car is on the rental car insurance page.

The same applies here: a card that isn’t listed has its terms in its own certificate.

The conditions that decide a claim

A certificate sets its own conditions, so a term given below is that card’s, and the card it belongs to is named beside it.

Paying for the trip with the card

How much of a trip must go on the card differs by card and by kind of cover. For the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, TD’s terms, in summary:

Trip cancellation, trip interruption, flight/trip delay and delayed/lost baggage: at least 75% of the trip cost must be paid with the TD credit card and/or Aeroplan points. Common carrier: the trip must be paid for in full with the card and/or points. Purchase security and extended warranty: at least 75% of the item cost must be paid with the card. Travel medical and trip cancellation/interruption have a pre-existing condition exclusion. All cover is subject to the conditions, limitations and exclusions in the certificates.

For the American Express Gold Rewards Card, Amex ties the cover to what is charged to the card, and for trip cancellation and interruption, to Membership Rewards points as well:

Amex's Certificates of Insurance for this card were amended and restated effective July 1, 2025, and the card page says all cover is subject to the terms of the master policies, with limitations, exclusions and restrictions. Delay and baggage cover starts when the full airline fare is charged to the card; travel accident cover when the plane, train, ship or bus fare is charged to the card; hotel burglary when the accommodation is charged to the card; rental cover when the full rental cost is charged to the card. Medical cover is only available while the person is a resident of Canada, covered by a government health plan and outside their province, and the certificate requires contacting Global Excel before emergency treatment. Trip cancellation and interruption cover applies when any portion of the prepaid travel arrangements is charged to the card (or paid with Membership Rewards points with taxes on the card).

For the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard, Rogers Bank’s certificate says the medical cover doesn’t need the trip charged to the card, though it has other conditions (the medical line is under age), and on the card’s cover in general Rogers Bank’s terms, in summary:

Underwritten by CUMIS General Insurance Company and administered by Allianz Global Assistance; coverage is subject to conditions, limitations and exclusions, including a pre-existing condition for certain benefits and the requirement to charge the eligible expenses or items to the card. Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption and Trip Delay coverage is removed on November 18, 2026.

How many days are covered

Medical cover runs for a set number of days from the start of the trip, and the medical table gives the days where the provider’s line states them. Amex’s certificate for the American Express Gold Rewards Card counts the departure date in those days, as its first line under what it covers says.

For a trip longer than the covered days, these providers state a way to extend or top up the cover:

Age on the departure date

The medical table shows where a provider covers travellers 65 or older for fewer days, and where its cover is for travellers 64 or under. On the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, the card page and the certificate word the age limit differently:

Up to $2,000,000 per insured person per trip. Coverage lasts the first 21 consecutive days of a trip for insured persons 64 and under and the first 4 consecutive days for insured persons 65 or older, with age measured on the departure date and the departure day counting as a full day. The card page words the older-age limit as "you or your spouse is aged 65 or older". Insured: the primary cardholder, the primary cardholder's spouse, dependent children and additional cardholders who meet the certificate's eligibility conditions (the primary cardholder must be a resident of Canada covered under a government health insurance plan or a valid health care plan in Canada for members of the Canadian Armed Forces).

The Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard has an upper age limit on its medical cover:

Emergency medical cover up to $1 million, only if age 75 or under: for the first 10 days of a trip if age 64 and under, or the first 3 days of a trip if age 65 up to and including 75. A pre-existing condition exclusion applies to emergency medical and trip cancellation, interruption and delay for travellers of any age. You do not need to charge the trip to the card for the medical cover, but the certificate requires a Canadian resident listed on the account, covered by a government health insurance plan for the trip, travelling outside their province or territory of residence, with the account in good standing.

Rogers Bank says that effective November 18, 2026, important changes will be made to the insurance benefits included with the card, and that other changes will also apply, including newly defined terms and updates to some existing terms.

Separate cover for long winter trips is compared on travel insurance for snowbirds.

Pre-existing medical conditions

A condition that wasn’t stable for a period before the trip can be left out of the medical cover, and the period and the test for “stable” are the certificate’s. For the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, TD’s certificate sets these terms:

For travel medical, the certificate defines the pre-existing medical condition period as 90 days (insured persons 64 and under) or 180 days (65 or older) immediately before the coverage period begins, and it counts a medical condition as stable when seven listed statements about treatment, drugs, symptoms, hospital stays or specialist referrals, tests and planned treatment are all true, with two stated exceptions: a routine adjustment of Coumadin, warfarin or insulin, and a change from a brand name medication to a generic of the same dosage.

For the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite+ Card, on pre-existing conditions:

Scotiabank's certificate says the insurance may not cover claims related to pre-existing conditions, whether disclosed or not, and that the administrator must be contacted before seeking emergency medical treatment or benefits may be limited or denied.

The two CIBC Aeroplan cards’ periods are in their lines under who counts as family.

Who counts as family

Who the medical cover insures is set by the certificate: on some, a spouse and dependent children are insured whether or not they travel with the cardholder, and additional cardholders are insured on some cards and not others. The certificates also set conditions such as Canadian residence and a government health insurance plan, which some of the lines below leave out. What these providers state:

The two CIBC Aeroplan cards differ on additional cardholders:

  • CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card: Up to $5,000,000 per insured person per trip, outside the home province. The coverage period is 15 days if the insured person is 64 or under (age measured on the departure date) and 3 days if 65 or over. Expenses for health problems that were not stable in the 90 days before leaving (64 or under) or 180 days before leaving (65 or over) are not covered. Insured: the cardholder (the primary cardholder; an authorized user is covered only if also the primary cardholder's spouse or dependent child), the cardholder's spouse and dependent children, whether they travel with the cardholder or not; coverage is only available while the person is a resident of Canada, covered by a government health insurance plan and travelling outside their province.
  • CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card: Up to $5,000,000 per insured person per trip, outside the home province. The coverage period is 31 days if the insured person is 64 or under (age measured on the departure date) and 10 days if 65 or over. Expenses for health problems that were not stable in the 90 days before leaving (64 or under) or 180 days before leaving (65 or over) are not covered. Insured: the primary cardholder, the primary cardholder's spouse and dependent children, whether they travel with the primary cardholder or not, and an authorized user; coverage is only available while the person is a resident of Canada, covered by a government health insurance plan and travelling outside their province.

On RBC’s certificate for the RBC Avion Visa Infinite, the age under which a legal guardian must complete the claim process for a covered person differs for Quebec residents; the line is under reading your certificate.

What do the Amex Aeroplan cards’ certificates cover?

The American Express Aeroplan Card has its own certificate. The certificate booklet's table of contents lists: Flight and Baggage Delay & Hotel Burglary Insurance; Lost or Stolen Baggage Insurance; Travel Accident Insurance; Car Rental Theft and Damage Insurance; Buyer’s Assurance Protection Plan; Purchase Protection Plan.

The American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card has its own certificate too. The certificate booklet's table of contents lists: Out of Province/Country Emergency Medical Insurance; Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption Insurance; Flight and Baggage Delay & Hotel Burglary Insurance; Lost or Stolen Baggage Insurance; Travel Accident Insurance; Car Rental Theft and Damage Insurance; Buyer’s Assurance Protection Plan; Purchase Protection Plan. Its medical cover is up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 consecutive days of a trip, for cardmembers under age 65.

For a trip paid with points, the two certificates name the card’s own reward program:

Per the certificates: flight and baggage delay cover does not pay for alternate travel arrangements the insured person makes such as a taxi, limo, intercity bus or an airline ticket (other than local taxi and ridesharing). There is no delay, trip or rental cover if the airline tickets, accommodations or prepaid arrangements were bought with points from a reward program other than the card reward program. Baggage cover excludes contact lenses, eyeglasses, sunglasses, artificial teeth and limbs, cameras and other electronics, among other items.

The Reserve’s other benefits are in its entry on best Aeroplan credit cards.

Reading your certificate

The card names in the tables link to the card’s page at its provider, or to the provider’s list of cards. In a certificate, the terms this page covers are who is insured, the maximum per person and per trip, the days and ages, what has to be charged to the card, the exclusions and the claim deadlines. RBC’s certificate for the RBC Avion Visa Infinite sets claim deadlines:

Pre-existing medical condition exclusions apply (stability periods of 90 days before departure if under age 75, or 180 days if age 75 or older). Covered persons include additional cardholders. Medical and trip claims: notice within 30 days and information within 90 days of the date the claim arises.

For Quebec residents, these providers state the following:

Card cover or separate travel insurance?

A certificate’s own terms can leave part of a trip without cover. The cases to compare against a card’s terms:

On the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, CIBC also reduces benefits by any amount another insurer pays back:

Certain fees or expenses must be charged to the credit card account, in full or at least in part, to be covered. Travel insurance is provided by Belair Insurance Company Inc.; the insurance becomes available when the card is activated and ends when the account is closed or no longer in good standing. Benefits payable are reduced by any amount reimbursed by another entity or insurer.

Whether a separate policy is worth buying is on is travel insurance worth it, and plans sold on their own are on standalone travel insurance.

Purchase protection, extended warranty and mobile device cover

Purchase protection insures new items bought with the card against theft or damage for a set number of days after purchase, and an extended warranty adds time to the manufacturer’s warranty. The days and caps differ between cards from one provider:

  • TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card: Purchase Security: eligible new items bought with the card are covered if stolen or damaged within 90 days of purchase; extended warranty, if the item comes with a manufacturer warranty valid in Canada, may double the warranty period for up to 12 additional months; mobile devices, up to $1,000 for loss, theft, accidental damage or mechanical breakdown of eligible mobile devices
  • TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card: Purchase Security: eligible new items bought with the card are covered if stolen or damaged within 120 days of purchase; extended warranty, if the item comes with a manufacturer warranty valid in Canada, may double the warranty period for up to 24 additional months; mobile devices, up to $1,500 for loss, theft, accidental damage or mechanical breakdown of eligible mobile devices
  • American Express Gold Rewards Card: purchase protection, 90 days from the date of purchase, up to $1,000 per occurrence
  • American Express Platinum Card: purchase protection, 120 days from the date of purchase, up to $1,000 per occurrence

What no-fee cards include is in the no-fee perks table. Disputing a charge for goods that didn’t arrive is explained on how to dispute a credit card charge.
