Student Loans Newfoundland and Labrador 2026: StudentAid NL Guide

Updated

Newfoundland and Labrador offers some of Canada’s most student-friendly loan conditions: both the federal Canada Student Loan and the NL provincial loan are now interest-free. Combined with Memorial University’s historically low tuition, NL students often graduate with lower debt loads than students in most other provinces.

Repayment

After the 6-month grace period ends, repayment begins on both loan portions:

Loan portionRepayment managed byPortal
Canada Student LoanNational Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC)nslsc.ca
NL Provincial LoanStudentAid NLstudentaid.gov.nl.ca

Both are now interest-free, meaning every dollar you pay reduces your principal directly. The standard repayment period is up to 10 years.

Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP)

If your income after graduation is low, the federal Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) can reduce your federal loan payment to as little as $0. Under RAP, payments are capped as a percentage of income.

Apply through your NSLSC account every 6 months to maintain coverage. StudentAid NL may have a parallel provincial program — contact them for current details.

Loan Forgiveness and Remission

NL has historically offered remission programs to encourage graduates to settle in the province. The student loan forgiveness Canada article covers national programs including:

  • Federal forgiveness for doctors and nurses in rural/remote areas: Up to $60,000
  • RAP balance forgiveness: Remaining balance on federal loans forgiven after 15 years on RAP
  • NL provincial programs: Check studentaid.gov.nl.ca for current NL-specific offers

Strategies for NL Students

StrategyWhy it matters
Consider Memorial University for lower tuitionBorrow less, graduate with less debt
Apply for all grants firstGrants reduce total loan amount; NL grants don’t need repayment
Make extra payments if possibleBoth loans are 0% — extra payments go directly to principal
Apply for RAP if income falls after graduationDon’t miss payments; default hurts credit and eligibility for future programs
Check for institutional bursaries at MUNMemorial offers in-house financial aid that stacks with StudentAid NL
