How the calculator converts pay

The calculator works out a yearly figure first and converts everything else from it:

  • Hourly to salary: the hourly rate times the hours you work in a year. Working hours are your hours per week times 52 weeks, less your vacation days (counted as fifths of a week). An hourly rate with unpaid vacation therefore gives a smaller salary than the same rate with every week worked.
  • Salary to hourly: the salary divided by the same working hours, so vacation days raise the hourly equivalent: a salaried employee is paid for vacation, but works fewer hours for the same pay.
  • Weekly, biweekly and monthly: the yearly figure divided by 52, 26 and 12.

The results are gross pay, before income tax, CPP and EI. For take-home pay, including from an hourly wage, the salary after tax calculator works out the deductions by province, and the payroll deductions guide explains each one.

Hourly to salary: an example

A rate of $30 an hour, 40 hours a week, with 4 weeks of unpaid vacation: $30 × 40 = $1,200 a week, and $57,600 a year over 48 working weeks. With every week paid, the same rate is $62,400 a year.

Salary to hourly: an example

A salary of $62,400 at 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is $30.00 an hour. At 37.5 hours a week, a common office schedule, the same salary is $32.00 an hour.

The number of hours per week matters as much as the rate. Many office and public-sector jobs count 37.5 hours a week, while many private-sector, trades and retail jobs count 40. The step-by-step guide to calculating salary from an hourly rate works through the formula by hand, with part-time hours, unpaid vacation and statutory holidays.

Pay per paycheque

The biweekly figure here is the yearly pay divided by 26 paycheques. How often you are paid changes the size of each cheque but not the year’s total: the biweekly paycheque calculator compares weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly and monthly pay and the months with three paycheques, and the semi-monthly paycheque page explains how 24 pay periods differ from 26.

By province

The four province calculators add the local minimum wage and take-home pay at common wages: Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec. Minimum wages for every province and territory are on the minimum wage page.

Hourly or salaried?

An hourly job and a salaried job with the same yearly pay aren’t always equal: overtime, paid vacation, benefits and EI hours can differ. Salary vs. hourly pay compares the two, and the total compensation guide shows how to value benefits and pension matching when comparing offers.
