Car Insurance in Calgary: Hail, Location and What Drives Your Premium

Updated

Calgary drivers face one risk more than most Canadians: the city has had some of the costliest hailstorms in the country. Postal code and traffic account for much of the rest of the difference between drivers. This page covers what is specific to insuring a car in Calgary. Alberta’s mandatory coverage, the Grid Rating Program and the Care-First system (in effect from January 1, 2027) are explained on the Alberta car insurance page, and our other guides are in the car insurance hub.

How Calgary compares

No official source publishes average car insurance premiums for Calgary or any other city. The closest published figure is Alberta’s provincial average: the General Insurance Statistical Agency puts the average premium per insured vehicle in Alberta, all coverages combined, at $1,820 for 2025. How Alberta compares with other provinces, and which comparisons are valid, is on the average car insurance by province page.

Hail: Calgary’s defining risk

Hail season in Alberta and the Prairies runs from June to September (Insurance Bureau of Canada). Two Calgary-area storms are among the costliest insured events in Canadian history: the June 2020 storm caused about $1.2 billion in insured losses, and the August 2024 storm about $3.25 billion, according to Insurance Bureau of Canada figures.

What hail means for your policyDetails
Coverage that paysHail damage is covered by comprehensive, specified perils or all perils coverage. Collision or upset coverage pays only for a collision with another object or an upset, not for hail or theft.
Effect of your own claimA hail claim is not an at-fault claim in third-party liability coverage, so it does not move a driver on the Grid.

Comprehensive is the coverage that pays for hail, so an owner who drops collision on an older car can still keep it; the difference between the two coverages is explained in collision vs comprehensive insurance. Covered parking reduces exposure, and moving the car under cover when a storm warning is issued can prevent damage. What happens when hail damage writes a car off is covered in what happens when your car is written off.

Where you live in Calgary

Insurers set rates partly by where the car is kept, using the claims, theft and traffic experience of the area. That means two drivers with the same car and record can be quoted different prices in different parts of the city. Quotes for your own postal code are the only reliable guide.

Winter and Chinooks

Calgary lies in the Chinook belt of southern and central Alberta, where the warm winds can raise the temperature abruptly (The Canadian Encyclopedia records a rise of 27°C in two minutes). Melting and refreezing can leave icy roads. Whether an insurer offers a winter tire discount is worth asking when comparing quotes.
