Canada has no single list of statutory holidays. Each province and territory sets its own in its employment standards law, and the Canada Labour Code sets one for workers in federally regulated industries such as banks, airlines and telecommunications. The table below puts the provincial, territorial and federal lists side by side, and the links jump to one jurisdiction.

Each column is one jurisdiction. A date means the day is a paid holiday there and “No” means it isn’t on that jurisdiction’s list. “Optional” marks Alberta’s optional holidays, days an employer can choose to recognize, and “Employer picks” marks Quebec, where the employer chooses Good Friday or Easter Monday. The laws use different names for the same idea: general holiday federally and in Alberta, public holiday in Ontario, statutory holiday in BC. On a phone, the table scrolls sideways.
Ontario, BC and Alberta each have a page of their own on this site: Ontario stat holidays, BC stat holidays and Alberta stat holidays.

Who gets holiday pay?
- Every employee is entitled to a holiday with pay on each general holiday falling within the period of employment.
- If you are scheduled to work a general holiday in a continuous operation and do not report, you lose the holiday pay.
- A collective agreement can displace these requirements only if it gives rights and benefits equal to or better than the Code and provides third-party dispute settlement.
Part-time employees get the same general holidays as full-time employees, with holiday pay adjusted to the hours they work.
How much is it?
- For most employees, general holiday pay is at least 1/20 of the wages, excluding overtime pay, earned in the 4-week period immediately before the week of the holiday.
- If you are paid in whole or part by commission and have completed at least 12 weeks of continuous employment, it is at least 1/60 of the wages, excluding overtime, earned in the 12 weeks before the week of the holiday.
- If you are not paid by time or your hours differ from day to day, your regular rate is your average daily earnings, excluding overtime, over the 20 days you worked before the holiday.
The federal holiday pay calculator works it out from your pay.
What if you work it, or it falls on a day off?
- If you are entitled to holiday pay and your employer requires you to work, you are paid no less than 1.5 times your regular rate for the time worked, plus general holiday pay.
- A manager or professional required to work gets their regular rate of pay and a substitute general holiday with pay at another time.
- When New Year's Day, Canada Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday you do not work, you get a holiday with pay on the working day just before or after.
- For the other general holidays falling on a non-work day, a holiday with pay can be added to your annual vacation.
The Canada Labour Code doesn’t forbid work on a general holiday, and an employer may substitute another day for a general holiday for one or more employees.
What about Ontario, BC and Alberta?
Each of these provinces has a page of its own on this site, linked below.

Most Ontario employees qualify for public holiday pay, however recently they were hired, unless they miss, without reasonable cause, all of their last scheduled day before the holiday or all of their first scheduled day after it (the last and first rule), or the shift they agreed or were required to work on the holiday. Details: who qualifies in Ontario and Ontario public holiday pay.
British Columbia
BC has 11 statutory holidays. In B.C. you qualify for statutory holiday pay if you have been employed for 30 calendar days and worked or earned wages on 15 of the 30 days before the holiday; working the day before and after is not the test. Details: who qualifies in BC and BC statutory holiday pay.
Alberta
Alberta has 9 general holidays, and employers can choose to recognize more days as holidays. In Alberta you get general holiday pay if you worked for the same employer for at least 30 workdays in the 12 months before the holiday and the holiday is a regular day of work for you (or you work it); you do not if you miss a scheduled holiday shift, or the day before or after, without your employer's consent. How is stat holiday pay worked out?
It depends on where you work: Ontario, BC, Alberta and the federal Canada Labour Code each use their own formula. Our stat holiday pay calculator works out holiday pay under each of the four, with a worked example for each; the federal formula is also in the federal section above.
For the other provinces and territories, the official page or Act linked under each table above sets out its own pay rules.
Is a stat holiday the same as a bank or civic holiday?
No. A statutory holiday is a day on the list in the employment law that covers you; being on that list is where the right to holiday pay starts, and some laws, such as Nova Scotia’s and Newfoundland and Labrador’s, add rules on who qualifies. Many people also get days off that aren’t on the list, such as Ontario’s first Monday in August: Ontario’s guide says some employers give these days, but the law doesn’t require it. In Alberta, if an employer recognizes an extra holiday, the holiday pay rules apply to it.
The Canada Revenue Agency publishes its own public-holiday list, but it is about tax deadlines: when a due date falls on a weekend or a public holiday the CRA recognizes, a payment it receives by the next business day counts as on time. Which days are paid holidays at work comes from the employment standards for your province, territory or federal industry.
Bank branch closures are on bank holiday hours, and stock market closures on TSX stock market holidays.
