Canadian Government Benefits & Tax Credits: Complete Guide 2026

Updated

Canada offers one of the most comprehensive government benefit systems in the world. This hub covers every major federal benefit and tax credit available to Canadians — including how to apply, how much you’ll receive, and when payments arrive.

Tax credits vs tax deductions: quick decision framework

Before looking up a program, classify it properly:

Type What it does Best way to think about it
Tax credit Reduces tax payable directly Dollar-for-dollar reduction in tax bill (or refundable cash payment)
Tax deduction Reduces taxable income Lowers the income amount that gets taxed
Benefit payment Direct cash transfer Ongoing support paid monthly or quarterly, usually income-tested

If your goal is immediate cash-flow support, focus on refundable credits and benefits first. If your goal is lowering next tax bill, focus on deductions and non-refundable credits.
