The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) is a federal quarterly benefit paid by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It is new as of July 2026 and looks to replace the GST/HST credit with the eligiblity, payment calculation and structure remaining the same, just an updated name.
There was a 25% increase to the benefit amount in July 2026 which will remain for the next 5 years from 2026 to 2031.

The payment period is reassessed each July based on previous year’s tax return with the payment period beginning in July and ending in June of the next year.
