The Canada Caregiver Credit (CCC) provides up to $8,773 (2026) in non-refundable tax credits for Canadians who support a family member with a physical or mental impairment, worth roughly $1,200+ in federal tax savings alone, plus provincial credits on top. It replaced three separate credits in 2017, simplifying the system into a single claim. The dependant doesn’t need to live with you, but you must provide regular financial support. Combined with provincial caregiver credits (Ontario adds up to $5,500), it can offset part of the cost of caring for an aging parent or a family member with a disability. It is one of several caregiving and disability credits in our deductions and credits directory.

The tax savings column multiplies each credit amount by the lowest federal rate, the way every non-refundable credit is valued (see how a tax credit differs from a deduction).
CRA may not ask for a medical certificate when you first claim, but it can ask later, so caregivers often keep one on file along with records of the support provided.
