GenuTax Standard is a free, donation-supported Windows tax program from a small Canadian developer. It has no income limit and no return limit, and its rental income forms are more detailed than most free software offers, at the cost of a dated interface. This review covers what it handles, how it compares with the other free options and who it suits. It is one of our Canadian tax software reviews.

Its five-star scores come from costing nothing and from the depth of its T776 rental forms; the dated navigator interface and the missing Quebec and mobile options are what hold the overall to three and a half. Our rating method explains each category.
What GenuTax handles
GenuTax covers the full federal return outside Quebec. Employment, pension and contract income, interest, dividends and trust distributions, capital gains on Schedule 3, RRSP and FHSA deductions, self-employment on the T2125, rental income on the T776 and home office expenses on the T777 are all included, as are the medical expense, disability, donation, tuition and carry-forward credits and the T1135 foreign property form. It imports slips through the CRA’s Auto-fill my return service. It doesn’t handle Quebec’s TP-1 provincial return.
It covers much the same forms as StudioTax, the other free Windows program; the differences are in return limits, rental income depth, interface and support:

Verdict: Wealthsimple Tax offers a more modern interface and Quebec support. GenuTax appeals to users who prefer a desktop application and want unlimited returns with strong rental support.
Rental Income in GenuTax: Why It Stands Out
GenuTax’s T776 implementation is particularly thorough:
| Rental feature | GenuTax support |
|---|---|
| Multiple rental properties | ✅ Yes, separate T776 per property |
| Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) classes | ✅ Class 1, 6, 8, 10, etc. |
| Pre-rental expenses | ✅ Eligible advertising/repair before first tenant |
| Mortgage interest | ✅ |
| Property tax | ✅ |
| Insurance | ✅ |
| Repairs and maintenance | ✅ |
| Professional fees | ✅ |
| Principal residence vs rental split year | ✅ |
| Net rental loss carry-forward | ✅ |
For landlords who want to avoid paying for software to handle what is essentially a couple of forms, GenuTax handles the full rental income picture accurately and without charge.
Who GenuTax Is Best For

| Self-employed with basic expenses | ✅ Good |
| T4 employee with investments | ✅ Adequate |
| Filing unlimited returns (large family, multiple people) | ✅ No return limit |
| Outside Quebec, uses Windows | ✅ |
| First-time filer wanting hand-holding | ⚠️ Manageable with online guides |
| Quebec resident | ❌ Not supported |
| Mobile or Mac user | ❌ Windows desktop required |
Bottom Line
GenuTax is a reliable, fully-featured free alternative to paid Canadian tax software. Its strongest competitive advantage is rental income support: T776 is handled better here than in most free alternatives. The unlimited returns and truly free model make it especially appealing for landlords, families, and preparers handling multiple returns. The dated interface requires some patience, but the underlying calculations and NETFILE certification are solid.
GenuTax: reliability and annual updates
GenuTax Standard has been CRA NETFILE-certified continuously for over a decade. The developer, a small independent Canadian software company, typically releases the updated annual version in January or February once CRA finalizes the relevant forms.
The official source is genutax.ca. Third-party downloads of GenuTax are not endorsed and may be outdated or modified. GenuTax does not auto-update, so each tax year the current certified version has to be downloaded from the website before filing.
