Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP)
RAP is the main relief program for Ontario student loans. It reduces payments based on income and family size.

RAP Stage 1: Affordable Payments
Monthly payment capped at percentage of income:

- Federal government pays interest on Canada Student Loan

Ontario-Specific Programs
Ontario Interest-Free Loans (Pre-2019)
For loans issued before 2019, Ontario charged interest. These older loans still accrue interest on the provincial portion.
Federal loans (Canada Student Loans) are interest-free as of April 2023.

Applying for RAP
Step 1: Create NSLSC Account
- Go to NSLSC.canada.ca
- Register with SIN and loan information
Step 2: Complete RAP Application
Information needed:
- Current income
- Family size
- Employment status
- Monthly expenses
Step 3: Recertify Every 6 Months
You must reapply every 6 months to confirm continued eligibility.
What If RAP Is Denied?
Options if you don’t qualify for RAP:

Important: Unlike the US, Canada does not have bankruptcy discharge for student loans within 7 years of finishing school.
